Short answer: TaxJar still does the one job most Amazon sellers need — import marketplace transactions, track nexus, and file returns — but the February 2026 price change moved most of the cost out of the headline price and into the filings. The published plans are $39/mo (Starter) and $99/mo (Professional), both at the 200-orders-a-month tier (taxjar.com/pricing , data checked 2026-08-16). What changed underneath is bigger: Starter’s included AutoFile credits went from four a year to two, Professional’s went from twelve a year to four, and each extra return went from $30/$35 to $50/$55. For a seller filing monthly in five states, that is a jump from roughly $1,908 to $3,368 a year on Starter — about +77% — with the subscription line accounting for less than a fifth of the increase.

This TaxJar review prices the software, and is not tax advice; nexus, registration, and filing-frequency decisions are worth running past a tax professional, as our Amazon FBA sales tax guide explains. Every figure below was read off TaxJar’s own pricing and support pages on 2026-08-16, with the pre-increase figures taken from archived copies of those same TaxJar pages, so the before-and-after uses one source rather than a competitor’s summary. If you have already decided to move, our TaxJar alternatives guide maps each replacement to the complaint that pushed you off; this page answers the narrower question of what staying costs.

TaxJar Pricing (Data Checked 2026-08-16)

TaxJar publishes two plans, and both start at a 200-order tier. Starter is $39/mo with “Up to 3 data import integrations”, email support, and “2 AutoFile credits a year, additional credits $50”. Professional is $99/mo with “Up to 10 total integrations”, phone support, a dedicated Customer Success Manager, and “4 AutoFile credits a year, additional credits $55” (taxjar.com/pricing, data checked 2026-08-16). There is a 30-day free trial on Starter; Professional routes to “Contact sales”. Annual billing carries a stated “Save 10% or more with annual pricing”.

The number most sellers miss is that the plan price is a per-order ladder, not a flat fee. The pricing page’s own volume slider steps through seventeen tiers on each plan. These are the tiers relevant to most Amazon sellers, read off that slider on 2026-08-16:

Orders / monthStarterProfessional
200$39/mo$99/mo
500$59/mo$249/mo
1,000$99/mo$499/mo
2,500$219/mo$1,199/mo
5,000+$319/mo$1,599/mo
10,000$429/mo$1,999/mo

Two things follow. First, Starter at 1,000 orders a month costs exactly what Professional costs at 200 — the headline “$39” describes a very small seller. Second, “orders” is not the same as sales: the pricing page tells you to “calculate your average monthly number of sales, refunds, and returns” when picking a tier, so an Amazon account with a heavy return rate climbs the ladder faster than its order count suggests. On Professional, API calls also count, at “1/10th of an order per call” (support.taxjar.com, article last updated June 12, 2026).

If you overshoot a tier in a peak month, TaxJar’s answer is flex fees: the pricing page states that “flex fees enable you to temporarily move to a higher tier without a permanent commitment”, reverting the following month. That is genuinely better than a forced annual upgrade, though at least one reviewer reports being charged a flex fee on transactions that were later removed as duplicates (Trustpilot, 2024-11-08).

The TaxJar Price Increase: What February 2026 Actually Changed

Coverage of the increase has focused on the Starter plan doubling. That is the smallest part of it. Comparing TaxJar’s own support documentation before and after shows the filing side moved much harder than the subscription side:

Line itemTaxJar pages, 2025TaxJar pages, 2026-08-16
Starter subscription (200 orders)$19/mo$39/mo
Professional subscription (200 orders)$99/mo$99/mo

Free AutoFile credits, Professional12 a year4 a year
Extra return, Starter$30$50
Extra return, Professional$35$55
100-filing bundle, Starter$2,500$4,500
Unlimited filing bundle, Starter$6,000$10,000

Sources: TaxJar support articles 139 and 409 as live on 2026-08-16, against the Internet Archive copies of the same two articles from 2025-12-06 and 2025-08-14 . The 2025 page stated: “TaxJar Starter plan subscribers receive four free AutoFile credits per year (one credit every three months), while Professional plans include 12 free AutoFile credits per year (one credit per month).”

Read that table again from the Professional column. The subscription price did not move at all — and a Professional customer filing monthly in five states still pays about 49% more this year than last, purely because eight previously free filings became billable at $55 instead of $35. A price increase that never touches the sticker price is the hardest kind to notice, and it is why “TaxJar doubled the Starter plan” understates what happened to sellers already on the platform.

Prepaid bundles blunt the per-return price but not by much: at $4,500 for 100 filings, Starter’s bundle rate is $45 against $50 pay-as-you-go, and TaxJar’s page states that “AutoFile bundles require an annual subscription plan”. Bundles are also “non-refundable”. So prepaying saves roughly the same 10% as annual billing, and costs you the ability to leave mid-year.

One widely repeated claim I could not confirm from TaxJar: that month-to-month customers on legacy pricing move to the new rates on 2026-10-01. Every source for that date I found is a competing vendor’s blog — TaxCloud’s among them — and TaxJar’s pricing page, its seven-article pricing support category, and articles 139 and 409 carry no legacy-pricing or effective-date language as of 2026-08-16. Treat the date as third-party reporting and check your own Plans & Billing page.

What TaxJar Costs a Multi-State Amazon Seller Per Year

Sales tax software is priced per order but consumed per return, so the only number that matters is the annual total at your state count. The model below holds the subscription at the 200-order Starter tier and assumes monthly filing frequency in every state, month-to-month billing with no annual discount and no bundles, and no registration fees:

States filed monthlyBefore the increaseAt 2026-08-16 ratesChange
1 state$468$968+107%
3 states$1,188$2,168+82%
5 states$1,908$3,368+77%
10 states$3,708$6,368+72%

Method, so you can rerun it with your own numbers: subscription (12 × $39, formerly 12 × $19) plus each return beyond the included credits (12 × states − 2 credits, at $50 each; formerly − 4 credits at $30 each). Our figures, calculated 2026-08-16 from the sourced prices above.

The pattern is worth pausing on. The percentage increase is largest for the smallest seller — the one-state filer pays more than double — because the flat subscription rise lands hardest when there are few filings to dilute it. Sellers assume price increases punish scale; this one punishes the beginner tier hardest, which is the tier TaxJar itself points marketplace sellers toward.

Two costs sit outside the table. State registrations are “a one-time fee per registration of $299” if you have TaxJar do the paperwork (support.taxjar.com, article last updated June 12, 2026), so a five-state expansion adds $1,495 in year one. And filing frequency is set by each state, not by you — a state that moves you from quarterly to monthly quietly adds eight returns, or $400 a year on Starter.

What TaxJar Actually Does for an Amazon Seller

If you sell only on Amazon, the marketplace already calculates and remits the sales tax on your marketplace orders. TaxJar does not dispute this; its own guidance for choosing the Starter plan reads: “You primarily sell on platforms like Amazon, Etsy, or eBay, the marketplace handles the tax calculations at checkout. This plan is designed to import those calculations and simplify your filing process” (support.taxjar.com, article last updated June 12, 2026).

That is an honest description of a narrower job than the marketing implies. For an Amazon-only seller, TaxJar is an import-and-file layer: it pulls the transactions, produces the jurisdiction-level reports the state wants, and files the return. The calculation engine, the API and the address validation — the expensive half of the platform — are aimed at sellers with their own checkout. Which is why the Starter/Professional decision is usually settled by where you sell rather than how big you are: Amazon plus Shopify plus a warehouse in another state is a Professional problem; Amazon and eBay alone rarely is.

The corollary is uncomfortable at current prices. If Amazon remits the tax and you file in one state, you are paying $968 a year for a convenience you could replicate from Seller Central reports and a state portal login. At five or ten states with mixed channels, the automation is doing real work and $3,368 is defensible. The tool has not got worse; the price has moved into the range where doing it yourself becomes rational for the smallest users.

What the Complaint Record Says About Support

TaxJar’s most consistent weakness across review platforms is not accuracy but reachability, and it predates the price change. A 1-star reviewer described discovering the gap the worst way: “Our account shows that returns were filed and sales tax paid every month, come to find out, that didn’t happen. We were delinquent by over $10k to the state. Furthermore, you can’t talk to anyone. No incoming or outgoing phone support” (Trustpilot, 2025-05-16).

The pattern repeats across years and platforms. From 2026: “Taxjar customer service is incredibly low quality… they are not capable of resolving simple issues with your filing if any of the automation data is screwed up” (Trustpilot, 2026-04-16). From late 2025, a Squarespace seller on home-state miscalculation: “Every time I try to get a clear answer, I am met with incorrect information or information that isn’t related to my issue at all… An issue that could be resolved over the phone in one call has taken multiple emails and weeks still with no resolution” (Trustpilot, 2025-10-13). Capterra reviewers describe the same self-service model and a decline in team quality following the Stripe acquisition, and G2 reviewers report calculation errors that led to penalties (Capterra and G2 review summaries).

Note what the pricing page now says against that backdrop: phone support and a guaranteed response time are Professional features. Starter, the plan TaxJar recommends to marketplace sellers, lists “Email support with a guaranteed response time” only. If your risk is a filing that silently fails, the $39 plan is the one with the least recourse — and 2026’s increase did not change that split.

The Stripe Question: Is TaxJar Going Anywhere?

Stripe acquired TaxJar in 2021, and the acquisition shows up in reviews as a support-quality complaint. What it does not appear to be, on current evidence, is a wind-down. TaxJar’s own comparison page states plainly: “TaxJar and Stripe Tax are two separate products that address unique tax needs”, positions TaxJar as “Built for small and medium-sized businesses that only sell in the US and are not using Stripe”, and notes that “TaxJar is also the US filing partner for Stripe Tax” (taxjar.com/taxjar-and-stripe-tax , data checked 2026-08-16).

Read together with the pricing page — which tells Stripe customers that “Stripe Tax might be a good fit for your business” — the direction is segmentation rather than sunset. TaxJar keeps the US-only, non-Stripe, marketplace-seller segment and the filing infrastructure that Stripe Tax itself depends on. For an Amazon seller that is reassuring on continuity and clarifying on pricing: a product deliberately kept in a narrow lane, being priced for the value of the filings rather than the size of the roadmap. No TaxJar page I checked on 2026-08-16 announces an end-of-life, and none should be inferred from the price move.

TaxJar Across Our Eight Dimensions: Stay or Price the Exit

Scored on the eight dimensions we apply site-wide — Accuracy, Ease, Depth, Automation, Team Fit, Support, Pricing, and Stage Fit, explained on our scorecards page — TaxJar’s profile in 2026 is strong on Automation and Ease, average on Depth for anyone needing international coverage, and weak on Support and Pricing. Weighting Support heaviest for a tax tool, as we do, it lands as a competent product with a structural service gap and a cost curve that now bends the wrong way for its smallest users.

Stay if you file in three or more states across more than one sales channel, are already on Professional, and your filings have been going out clean — the switching cost of re-registering integrations mid-year is real, and $3,368 for five states of hands-off filing is not out of line with the category. Price the exit if you are a single-state, Amazon-only seller now paying triple digits per return for a filing you could make yourself, or if you have ever needed support during a filing problem and could not get it. Where to look next depends on which of those it is: our TaxJar alternatives guide sorts the options by complaint, Avalara is the per-state alternative at scale, Link My Books covers the accounting-reconciliation side rather than filing, and hellotax is the EU VAT answer if your problem crossed a border rather than a state line.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does TaxJar cost in 2026? Starter is $39/mo and Professional $99/mo at the 200-orders-a-month tier, rising by order volume — Starter reaches $99/mo at 1,000 orders and $319/mo at 5,000+ (taxjar.com/pricing, data checked 2026-08-16). Filings are billed separately: two included AutoFile credits a year on Starter and four on Professional, then $50 or $55 per return.

How much did TaxJar go up in February 2026? The Starter subscription went from $19/mo to $39/mo, per-return AutoFile fees from $30/$35 to $50/$55, and included annual filing credits fell from four to two on Starter and twelve to four on Professional (TaxJar support pages, 2025 archived copies versus live 2026-08-16). A five-state monthly filer on Starter goes from about $1,908 to $3,368 a year.

Is TaxJar shutting down after the Stripe acquisition? Nothing on TaxJar’s site says so. Its comparison page states that TaxJar and Stripe Tax are two separate products and that TaxJar is the US filing partner for Stripe Tax (data checked 2026-08-16). The observable change is narrower positioning, not a sunset.

Do I even need TaxJar if I only sell on Amazon? Amazon calculates and remits sales tax on marketplace orders, so TaxJar’s job for an Amazon-only seller is importing those transactions, tracking nexus, and filing returns rather than calculating tax. At one state that convenience runs about $968 a year at current rates; at five or more states with other channels it is doing considerably more. Confirm your own obligations with a tax professional — see our Amazon FBA sales tax guide .

Are the prepaid AutoFile bundles worth it? Only marginally. Starter’s 100-filing bundle is $4,500, an effective $45 per return against $50 pay-as-you-go, and TaxJar states that bundles require an annual subscription plan and are non-refundable (data checked 2026-08-16). You trade mid-year flexibility for roughly the 10% annual billing already gives you.
