The right SimplyVAT alternative depends on which part of the service failed you. If the problem is quote-only pricing, hellotax is the only provider here that publishes rates. If it is filing quality and data visibility, Taxdoo and Taxually are platform-first. If you need more than VAT — EPR, customs, US sales tax — AVASK and Avalara have the widest scope. And if you sell in one or two countries, registering for the One Stop Shop yourself and hiring a local accountant is a legitimate option that several ex-SimplyVAT reviewers took. There is no drop-in replacement, only five different shapes of provider — and the complaint that pushed you off SimplyVAT tells you which shape you need.
This compares service providers; it is not tax advice. Every tax rule below is sourced to an official European Commission or Amazon page with its check date, and anything from user reports rather than an official source is labelled as such. Provider capabilities and prices were checked on vendor sites on 2026-07-23. Confirm your own obligations with a qualified tax adviser.
What SimplyVAT is (checked 2026-07-23)
SimplyVAT (simplyvat.com) is a UK-based VAT compliance service for ecommerce sellers. Per its own site, checked 2026-07-23, it covers EU VAT registrations and returns, OSS, IOSS, the non-Union scheme, Intrastat, VAT refunds, rate reviews, audit support, customs clearance, EPR and EORI numbers. Its EU page lists 13 countries — Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden — plus non-EU coverage including the UK, USA, Canada, Japan, Norway, Switzerland, Australia, UAE and Saudi Arabia.
Two facts matter for comparison. Pricing is quote-based; there is no public rate card as of 2026-07-23 — the FAQ states that “Prices vary depending on which country you need to register in”. And SimplyVAT now runs its own platform, Tribexa, which connects to Amazon, eBay, Shopify and WooCommerce and pulls sales data automatically (simplyvat.com/tribexa/, checked 2026-07-23) — relevant because the absence of a dashboard is one of the older complaints below.
The homepage advertises a “4.7 Trustpilot rating”, “8K+ Happy clients” and “11+ Years of service” (checked 2026-07-23). The 19 reviews compiled for this page are the negative tail of that distribution, not the average — but they cluster, and the failure modes they describe are the ones to write into whatever contract you sign next.
Why sellers look for a SimplyVAT alternative
Four themes repeat across the reviews we compiled (19 reviews, Trustpilot, dated 2021-04 to 2026-07). Each quote is a verbatim excerpt with its rating and date.
Support collapses after onboarding. The loudest complaint, and it spans five years. A February 2026 reviewer described the arc precisely: “Agents kept changing, emails stopped being answered, and no clear ownership of our account remained. As a result, VAT returns were missed, and we started receiving official letters from tax authorities demanding payment of VAT, interest and penalties” (Trustpilot, 1 star, 2026-02-05). A July 2026 review is blunter: “Zero customer service, no-one answers phones, no-one replies to emails” (Trustpilot, 1 star, 2026-07-01). A 2023 reviewer noted the asymmetry: “Our emails are unanswered for months… but their invoices and payment reminders keep coming frequently” (Trustpilot, 1 star, 2023-03-07).
Leaving is expensive and slow. Deregistration draws the most money-specific complaints. One reviewer was “locked into a one-year commitment, and deregistering would cost an additional £300” (Trustpilot, 1 star, 2026-02-02). Another: “10 months after paying a fortune for deregistration, it hasn’t happened” (Trustpilot, 2 stars, 2025-11-08). A third described the timing mechanic — “They ignored our communication so they could delay our de registration so that it slipped into the next VAT quarter and then charged for an unnecessary additional 3 months work” (Trustpilot, 1 star, 2024-12-28) — while others cite “600 GBP to cancel their service” (Trustpilot, 1 star, 2024-08-26). SimplyVAT’s FAQ confirms exit costs exist: “there is often a cost for doing so. This cost will vary from country to country” (checked 2026-07-23). The amounts above are individual seller reports, not official rates.
The filing chain has intermediaries. The most structurally useful review, from a customer of over two years, describes the delivery model: “SimplyVAT doesn’t file VAT directly but uses partners/agents. This structure means they lack control over their own fees, filing timelines, and de-registration processes” (Trustpilot, 1 star, 2024-08-26). The same reviewer reported advice priced out of reach — “Tax questions are directed to a tax expert at a high hourly rate (375 GBP/hour), with a minimum booking of one hour” — and that “my last 4 quarters of OSS returns were rejected. This has gone unnoticed for a year.” SimplyVAT’s public pages do not state whether filings are in-house or via local partners (checked 2026-07-23), so treat that account as a user report and ask the question in your sales call.
Errors land on your tax bill, not theirs. One seller reported bad advice on EORI linkage that cost “thousands of pounds” in unreclaimed import duties, summarising the response as “we’re not import specialists” (Trustpilot, 1 star, 2021-08-04). Another found valid Italian domestic B2B customers flagged as invalid because “SimplyVAT only checks valid VAT IDs against VIES” (Trustpilot, 2 stars, 2021-07-15).
One correction in SimplyVAT’s favour: the 2024 complaint that “There’s no centralized dashboard, requiring constant email searches for important documents” predates Tribexa, which is live as of 2026-07-23.
The rules your provider is actually managing
Choosing between VAT providers feels arbitrary until you know what they are being paid to do. These obligations are each sourced to an official page, checked 2026-07-23. None of it is tax advice; your facts may change the answer.
| Obligation | What the official source says | Source (checked 2026-07-23) |
|---|---|---|
| Local registration when you hold stock | “If you store and fulfill your products in the EU, you’ll also need to register for VAT in each of those countries before you start selling to customers.” | Amazon — Getting started with European VAT |
| One registration for cross-border sales | “A taxable person who opts to use one of the OSS schemes is only required to register in one single Member State, the Member State of identification.” | EC — Register for OSS |
| The EUR 10 000 threshold | “where a supplier’s intra-Community distance sales of goods are lower than EUR10 000 in a calendar year, then the place of taxation is where dispatch or transport begins” | EC — Place of taxation |
| What the Union scheme covers | “intra-Community distance sales of goods” and “domestic supplies of goods for which he is a deemed supplier” | EC — Declare and pay OSS |
| Filing frequency | “The VAT return is submitted quarterly in the non-Union and in the Union scheme and monthly in the import scheme.” | EC — The One Stop Shop |
| IOSS scope | For “consignments not exceeding EUR 150”; a seller with no EU establishment “needs to appoint an intermediary to be able to use the scheme” | EC — Register for OSS |
| When the marketplace owes the VAT | The platform is treated as the supplier when “non-EU sellers sell goods to EU customers through their platform” and when “goods are imported (value of up to EUR 150) and sold via the platform” | Your Europe — EU VAT One Stop Shop |
Two consequences shape the whole comparison.
OSS and local registrations are different products. The Union scheme covers intra-Community distance sales and, for deemed suppliers, certain domestic supplies, while Amazon states that storing inventory in a country brings a registration requirement there (both checked 2026-07-23). Pan-EU FBA sellers therefore usually end up with one OSS return and several local registrations. Price that whole shape, not the OSS line alone.
The schemes are optional, and OSS registration is something you can do yourself in your Member State of identification (European Commission, checked 2026-07-23). One SimplyVAT reviewer did exactly that after being quoted for it: “I researched and could do both deregistration by myself, which was not that difficult and were for free” (Trustpilot, 1 star, 2021-10-27). A provider’s OSS fee buys convenience and review, not access.
Context for anyone who arrived at SimplyVAT via Amazon: Amazon’s own programme is gone. “We’ve decided to end the VAT Services on Amazon program on October 31, 2024”, after which “Your tax provider will manage all future VAT filings and charge you directly” (Amazon Seller Central , checked 2026-07-23). Many sellers now shopping for a provider are here because of that.

hellotax — the published-price answer
Pricing (hellotax.com/pricing/, checked 2026-07-23): New Seller at €49/month per country (up to 500 transactions yearly in total per company across all countries, one integration, email support, covering DE, UK, CZ and FR); Established Seller at €119/month per country (unlimited transactions, dedicated account manager, phone and email support, one hour of annual consultation); a 5 Countries Package at €470/month; OSS at €89/month. One-time fees are €300 per country for registration or takeover and €149 for OSS registration on monthly billing. Annual billing is listed at “Save 20% + Registration / Takeover free”.
Coverage: 12 operating countries — Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, UK, Ireland. Narrower than SimplyVAT’s list, which adds Austria, Denmark, Finland and several non-EU jurisdictions.
Process: hellotax describes its software as the core of the service, with “all information and deadlines clearly displayed in one place for one or many countries and companies”, and says it works with “specialized local tax accountants” (hellotax.com, checked 2026-07-23). Whether those accountants are employees or contracted partners is not stated — the same question worth asking SimplyVAT.
Limitations: the €49 tier is capped at 500 transactions a year across four countries, so most active FBA sellers land on the €119 tier or the country package — a four-figure annual commitment at five countries, though yearly billing takes 20% off and waives registration.
Taxually — the platform-at-scale answer
Capability: automated data processing with machine learning for calculation, described by Taxually as “advanced automation with expert oversight” — in its documented flow you approve the data and Taxually then submits — covering VAT compliance and registration, US sales tax, cross-border VAT payment (OneTax) and EPR. Taxually claims “20,000+ companies” served and coverage “over 150 countries”, and lists Amazon among its integrations and partner logos (taxually.com, checked 2026-07-23).
Pricing: not published; quote-based, no public rate card as of 2026-07-23.
Limitations: putting continuity in the platform rather than a named account manager is good against the “agents kept changing” failure, less good if your transaction types need human interpretation. The 150-country figure is a group-level claim; confirm which entity files in each of your countries and on what timetable.
Taxdoo — the accounting-grade data answer
Capability: Taxdoo aggregates sales, fees and payments from 20+ connections including Amazon, eBay, Kaufland, Shopify, Zalando, JTL, Billbee and Xentral, handles EU-wide tax rates, and states it will “submit VAT returns for you on time”. Output is “GoBD-compliant & DATEV-compatible” — the format German accountants work in (taxdoo.com, checked 2026-07-23). That directly addresses the reviewer who found four quarters of rejected OSS returns a year later.
Coverage: the EU and UK (checked 2026-07-23) — narrower than SimplyVAT’s non-EU list.
Pricing: the homepage references Professional and Premium packages but publishes no rates; quote-based, no public rate card as of 2026-07-23.
Limitations: the DATEV orientation is a strong fit if your accountant is German-speaking and neutral otherwise, and EU-plus-UK scope will not follow you to Japan, Canada or the Gulf.
AVASK — the widest-scope answer
Capability: VAT registration and filing, sales tax registration and filing, EPR, customs clearance and imports/exports, OSS/IOSS registration, and GPSR/EU Responsible Person, across “60+ countries” (avask.com, checked 2026-07-23). Pricing is not published; it runs through an application and consultation.
Limitations — read this one carefully. The breadth is real, but our AVASK review found its recent reviews clustering around billing after cancellation, slow support and filing errors — the same shapes SimplyVAT reviewers describe. Swapping one done-for-you managed service for another does not fix a managed-service failure mode; it changes who you supervise. If you are cross-shopping the two, our AVASK alternatives comparison covers that side.
Avalara — the enterprise answer
Capability: VAT determination, VAT returns and reporting, VAT registration and returns management, and e-invoicing and live reporting, on a platform Avalara describes as covering “190+ countries” (avalara.com, checked 2026-07-23).
Pricing: not published; Avalara routes to a pricing enquiry, so there is no public rate card as of 2026-07-23. Expect annual contracts scaled by transaction volume and modules.
Limitations: heavier than a seller with three EU registrations needs, and the quote depends on which modules you take. It solves scale, not attentiveness — you still need a named escalation path in writing.
DIY OSS plus a local accountant — the underrated answer
How it works: OSS registration happens in a single Member State of identification, through that country’s tax authority, and the schemes are optional (European Commission, checked 2026-07-23). Local registrations in countries where you hold stock then go to an accountant in that country.
Where it breaks: once you hold inventory in three or more countries, coordinating separate local accountants costs more attention than it saves in fees, and the deadline calendar becomes the risk. Language is the other tax: German and Italian correspondence arrives in German and Italian.
Reality check: one seller quoted “500 pounds to deregister, plus 250 dollars to send null returns” did it themselves instead (Trustpilot, 1 star, 2021-10-27). That is one seller, one country pair — difficulty varies by country, as SimplyVAT’s own FAQ notes.
What to put in the contract
The reviews above are a checklist in disguise. Get these five in writing before signing with any provider here:
- Exit terms, in numbers — minimum term, notice period, deregistration fee per country. Most money-specific complaints in this corpus are about leaving, not joining.
- Who actually files — in-house staff or a local partner firm per country. This decides whether your provider controls filing timelines or merely forwards them.
- Proof of filing — a submission reference number per return, per country, on a schedule. The rejected-returns story is only possible when nobody checks receipts.
- What advice costs — if tax questions are billed hourly with a minimum booking, the sticker price is not the price.
- Who you escalate to — a named role, not a ticket queue.
Then match the reason you are leaving to the provider that answers it: pricing opacity to hellotax; scale and automation to Taxually; data and bookkeeping quality to Taxdoo; scope beyond VAT to AVASK; enterprise integrations to Avalara; a one- or two-country footprint to DIY OSS with a local accountant.
How amzfinder assesses seller services
Every service here is read against the same eight dimensions used across the site — Accuracy, Ease, Depth, Automation, Team Fit, Support, Pricing and Stage Fit (scoring methodology ). For compliance services we weight Support and Accuracy heaviest, because the SimplyVAT complaint set is a support-and-continuity story, not a feature story. These are managed services rather than software we can benchmark hands-on, so this page compares documented scope, published pricing and dated public reviews.
For the wider picture, see the guide to selling on Amazon Europe and the breakdown of Amazon FBA fees . If your problem is US sales tax rather than EU VAT, TaxJar alternatives and the Amazon FBA sales tax guide cover that side.
FAQ: SimplyVAT alternatives
What is the cheapest SimplyVAT alternative? hellotax is the only provider here publishing rates: €49/month per country on New Seller (capped at 500 transactions a year, covering DE, UK, CZ and FR) and €89/month for OSS, plus €300 per country for registration on monthly billing (checked 2026-07-23). SimplyVAT, Taxually, Taxdoo, AVASK and Avalara are quote-based with no public rate card as of 2026-07-23, so like-for-like comparison needs quotes from each.
Can I register for OSS myself instead of paying a provider? Yes. Under the official rules a business using an OSS scheme “is only required to register in one single Member State, the Member State of identification”, and the schemes are optional (European Commission, checked 2026-07-23). Registration runs through that country’s tax authority. A provider adds return preparation, deadline management and review — not access. Confirm your situation with a tax adviser.
Does OSS replace my local VAT registrations? Not necessarily. The Union scheme covers “intra-Community distance sales of goods” and, for deemed suppliers, certain domestic supplies (European Commission, checked 2026-07-23), while Amazon states that if “you store and fulfill your products in the EU, you’ll also need to register for VAT in each of those countries” (checked 2026-07-23). Pan-EU FBA sellers commonly end up with both. Confirm this one with a tax adviser — it depends on where your stock sits.
How long does an EU VAT registration take? SimplyVAT’s FAQ states that once paperwork is complete, “the registration process can take anywhere between 3 – 10 weeks to receive a VAT registration number, depending on the country” (checked 2026-07-23). That is one provider’s stated range, not an official figure — timelines are set by each national tax authority.
Is switching worth it if my only complaint is support? Support is the most common complaint across every managed VAT service we have reviewed, including AVASK , so another done-for-you provider is not automatically an upgrade. Two things help more than the logo on the invoice: a platform that shows filing status without an email thread (Taxdoo, Taxually, hellotax and SimplyVAT’s own Tribexa all have one), and a written escalation path agreed before you need it.
