hellotax is an EU VAT compliance provider for ecommerce sellers, combining its own dashboard with local tax accountants across 12 European countries. Our assessment after checking every hellotax page cited here live on 2026-08-01 and reading its public complaint record: hellotax is the rare provider in this category that publishes a rate card at all, which is a genuine advantage over quote-only competitors — but the headline “no hidden costs” does not survive contact with its own pricing page, and the loudest recent complaints are about missed deadlines and registrations that quietly lapsed. Buy it for the price transparency; supervise it for delivery.

This is a single-provider assessment, not a shortlist; if you have decided to switch and want candidates, our SimplyVAT alternatives and AVASK alternatives pages set hellotax against Taxually, Taxdoo, Staxxer and Avalara. It is not tax advice.

How This hellotax Review Was Checked

Three evidence layers, kept apart. Official pages read the same dayhellotax.com , its pricing page , One-Stop-Shop page , VAT Software page and About Us page , all checked 2026-08-01; anything in quotation marks appears verbatim on the page cited. A public complaint corpus from Trustpilot, G2 and Capterra holding 52 hellotax entries, 44 dated 2020-10-14 to 2026-07-06 and 8 undated, deliberately weighted toward negative reviews — it shows what goes wrong, not how often. The rules the service is paid to meet, from official EU and Amazon sources. One gap: we could not verify hellotax’s aggregate Trustpilot score on 2026-08-01 — Trustpilot returned HTTP 403 to every automated request — so this review quotes none.

What hellotax Is (Checked 2026-08-01)

hellotax (hellotax.com) sells VAT compliance to online sellers in Europe: “Our specialized local tax accountants will keep you VAT compliant in Europe” (checked 2026-08-01). Its About Us page states it was “Founded in 2016 by Cristian Noguera and Christoph Prokes” with “corporate headquarters in Alicante, Spain”; the operating entity is hellotax Global S.L.

Three moving parts. Registration and filing — registration or takeover per country plus preparing and submitting returns, with a stated turnaround of “We get you a VAT ID in 4-12 weeks”. OSS — “hellotax takes care of your OSS registration for a one-time fee of 149€”, plus ongoing reports and filing. The dashboard, which hellotax calls “the core of all hellotax services” and whose FAQ says “Our VAT automation software is basically free”; its most distinctive feature is the Tax Letter Inbox, which “processes and translates incoming letters from tax authorities” — genuinely useful if you hold a Polish or Czech registration and read neither language.

Coverage is finite and stated: “We operate in following countries: Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, UK, Ireland” — twelve, covering the Amazon EU marketplaces and the usual FBA storage countries, but not Austria, Denmark, Finland or Romania. One number is often misread: the homepage “+10K” is captioned “eCommerce sellers from around the world have already subscribed” inside a newsletter signup block — a newsletter figure, not a customer count.

hellotax Pricing: Published, and Not Quite Flat (Checked 2026-08-01)

For EU VAT compliance, AVASK, SimplyVAT and Taxually all quote privately (checked 2026-08-01: AVASK’s plan finder is a five-step questionnaire with no prices; simplyvat.com/pricing/ and taxually.com/pricing both 404), and Avalara publishes starting prices only for its US tax products. hellotax puts numbers on a page you can read without a sales call.

PlanPay Monthly (switch manually)Pay Yearly (page default)Key limit on the card
New Seller49€ per country39€“Up to 500 transactions yearly”; “Only available for DE, UK, CZ and FR”
OSS – Physical & Digital Goods89€75€“Additional cost may apply in NL.”
Established Seller119€ per country99€Unlimited transactions; account manager
5 Countries Package470€ per country399€“5 countries included”

Switch the page to Pay Monthly and one-off fees appear on every plan card, under a heading labelled, without irony, “Additional Costs”: “VAT Registration / Takeover for 300€ per country (one time)” and “OSS Registration for 149€ (one time)”. The default Pay Yearly view hides that heading and badges annual billing “Save 20% + Registration / Takeover free”.

Four things a buyer should notice.

1. “No hidden costs” is the headline sitting above those Additional Costs blocks. The pricing page’s H1 is “EU VAT Compliance with no hidden costs”; About Us opens “Tax Compliance with personal service and no hidden costs.” The blocks render only on the Pay Monthly view, since the page loads on Pay Yearly — but in both states it closes with “Additional compliance fees may apply in certain countries due to local VAT regulations”, a sentence that by construction describes a cost you cannot see in advance. The fees are disclosed, which beats most of the category; they are not absent, which is what the headline says.

2. The advertised entry price is the annual rate. The pricing page’s browser title reads “EU VAT Compliance from 39€/month | hellotax”, and 39€ is the default view’s figure — the page loads on Pay Yearly — but there it is labelled “/ Per year”, not per month. On monthly billing the same plan is 49€.

3. Per-country pricing compounds, and one card contradicts itself. New Seller and Established Seller are priced per country, so a seller registered in Germany, France, Poland and the Czech Republic on Established Seller pays four times 119€. The 5 Countries Package exists for that — yet its card carries the same “Per Country” qualifier while also listing “5 countries included”, and the homepage version omits the qualifier entirely.

4. Two hellotax pages label the same OSS price differently. On 2026-08-01 the homepage OSS card reads “89€ / One Time” while the pricing page card for the same plan reads “89€ / Per month”. The One-Stop-Shop page’s “OSS Reports start from 41€ / month and OSS Reports & Filings start from 75€ / month” is not a third price — those are its 490€ and 890€ annual plans divided by twelve. Page maintenance drifts and none of this is necessarily a bait, but it is exactly the ambiguity to resolve on an invoice before you pay.

The complaint record shows what happens when it is not: an unadvertised per-item charge — “they told me it would be an additional 25€ per invoice because I only had the cheapest package” (Trustpilot, 2026-05-19) — and a plan boundary crossed unilaterally: “Without asking HelloTax simply put me on the higher service level and took ~1000 euros from my credit card” (Trustpilot, 2024-06-16). With New Seller capped at 500 transactions a year company-wide, that boundary arrives early.

Registration and Filing Timelines: The Claim Against the Record

This is the dimension that decides whether a VAT provider is worth anything: a late filing is a penalty, and a lapsed registration can stop you selling.

The official claim: “We get you a VAT ID in 4-12 weeks”, with an honest qualifier on the same page — “Please note that the duration of the application process is beyond our control once it’s in the authorities’ hands” (hellotax.com/one-stop-shop, checked 2026-08-01).

The complaint record disputes the part within their control — the estimate itself moving after payment. A seller registering in Poland wrote: “Initially, I was told that the VAT registration would be completed within 2 to 4 weeks”, then “five days after I submitted my documents and paid the fee, I was informed that the process would actually take 1 to 2 months” (Trustpilot, 2025-07-15). On a German registration: “They said they would get the German VAT number within a maximum of 3 months… this process took 8 months” (Trustpilot, 2024-12-03).

The more serious pattern is things lapsing silently. The most recent corpus entry is titled “VAT deregistered, deadline missed, €1,000+ in avoidable costs” and reads: “Our Polish VAT number was deregistered in March 2026. Hellotax never noticed – we discovered it ourselves 7 weeks later via VIES” (Trustpilot, 2026-07-06). Cancellations are reported not taking either: “Despite requesting our subscription be cancelled in the UK, it’s been three weeks and its still showing as an active subscription on their system” (Trustpilot, 2026-03-19).

The dashboard is built to surface deadlines, but in several accounts the thing that failed was caught by the seller. Whoever you hire, validate your own numbers in the European Commission’s official VIES service on a schedule you control.

The Amazon Integration Complaints, Specifically

hellotax markets automatic marketplace data ingestion, and for an FBA seller that integration is the product — it decides which sale gets taxed where. It is also where the corpus clusters hardest. The most detailed account, from a Shopify and Amazon seller: “3 months later and we still cannot file any returns with Hellotax because their system is filled with errors and the Shopify upload did not work”, and specifically “there are errors mislabeling sales as inventory movement between amazon facilities and incorrect sales prices” (Trustpilot, 2025-03-18). That failure mode deserves a second read: an FBA transfer between fulfilment centres is a movement of your own stock, not a sale — booked as a sale it inflates taxable turnover in the departure country. A two-year customer describes ending up doing it by hand: “mainly issues with their automated integrations which aren’t that automated (we’ve been manually uploading Shopify sales each month this whole time)” (Trustpilot, 2026-01-07). G2 and Capterra reviewers report the same failures, including errors in zero-rated zones such as the Canary Islands.

For balance, the corpus is not uniform: a 2-star reviewer separates the two halves cleanly — “Product itself is okay. But tax advisor quality is poor” (Trustpilot, 2023-09-04). hellotax’s own About Us page presents selected positive reviews, including “Stress-free service. They take care of all my foreign VAT related issues without me having to do anything” (attributed to Erik Russo, checked 2026-08-01) — vendor-selected testimonials, weighted accordingly.

One structural claim has two sides: a reviewer states “The allocated tax advisors are freelancers, and you have no direct access to them” (Trustpilot, 2025-03-05), while the About Us page names accountants and team leaders for Germany, Italy, the UK, Czechia/Slovakia and France (checked 2026-08-01). We could verify neither — which makes “who files my return, and can I speak to them” a fair question to put in writing.

What the Rules Actually Require

Judge any provider against the obligation, not its marketing:

  • OSS returns are quarterly, with a hard deadline. The taxable person “is required to submit the One Stop Shop VAT return electronically to the Member State of identification by the end of the month following the end of the tax period covered by the return”, the Union scheme period being a calendar quarter; and with no supplies and no corrections, “he is required to submit a ’nil return’” (European Commission , checked 2026-08-01). A provider that files nothing in a dead quarter has missed a filing, not saved you work.
  • OSS does not replace every registration. “Without the OSS schemes, the supplier would be required to register in each Member State in which he supplies goods or services to his customers” (European Commission , checked 2026-08-01), and storing stock still pulls you into local registration: “if you plan to use Pan-European FBA to store your inventory and fulfill your orders, you’ll need to register for VAT before you start selling to customers in Europe” (Sell on Amazon , published 2025-06-19, checked 2026-08-01). Hence FBA sellers usually need both a per-country plan and OSS; amzbase covers the threshold mechanics and provider selection in more depth.
  • Keep your own records for a decade. “You will need to keep your records for up to 10 years in case of audits” (Your Europe , checked 2026-08-01) — an obligation that outlives any subscription.

hellotax Across Our Eight Dimensions

We evaluate every seller service on eight dimensions (see our scoring methodology ). hellotax is a managed service, not software we can benchmark hands-on, so these are a qualitative read rather than numeric cross-tool scores.

  • Accuracy — the dimension to scrutinise. Returns filed late or not at all, a registration deregistered without the provider noticing, marketplace data mapped incorrectly.
  • Ease of Use — a real strength. Authority correspondence OCR’d, translated and turned into dated to-dos in the dashboard.
  • Depth — narrow by design. Twelve countries, VAT and OSS only; no EPR, customs, US sales tax or GPSR.
  • Automation — claimed broadly, reported unevenly. Threshold, storage and goods-movement monitoring is advertised; several reviewers describe reverting to manual CSV uploads.
  • Team Fit — depends on the tier. A dedicated account manager appears only from Established Seller (119€ per country per month) upward; New Seller is email support only.
  • Support — the most repeated complaint. Slow ticket loops, cancellations not registering, account managers unable to answer VAT questions.
  • Pricing — transparent by category standards, not flat. Published rates are a genuine advantage; the per-country multiplier, 500-transaction cap, 300€ and 149€ one-offs and country-specific extras make the sticker a floor.
  • Stage Fit — small to mid EU sellers who want a readable price. Best at one to five registrations, with supervision.

Who hellotax Fits — and Who Should Look Elsewhere

Reasonable fit if you hold registrations in a few of its 12 countries and want a price you can read before a sales call; receive tax correspondence in languages you do not speak; want OSS filed at a published rate; and will check VIES and confirm each filing yourself.

Likely to frustrate you if you need EPR, customs, US sales tax or GPSR alongside VAT; are past 500 transactions a year but not ready for 119€ per country per month; want a hands-off provider; or need a clean, fast exit — post-cancellation billing is a repeated theme.

Before signing, get four things in writing: the full annual cost across every country including one-off and country-specific fees; your tier and what happens at the transaction cap; the cancellation process and its effective date; and a named point of accountability per country. Our AVASK review applies the same tests to a broader, quote-only competitor; our Amazon FBA sales tax guide covers the US side.

The Bottom Line

hellotax does something almost no competitor does: it publishes what it charges. But the rate card is a floor rather than a total, and the recent complaint record is dominated by the two failures that actually cost sellers money — deadlines missed and registrations lapsing unnoticed. Treat it as a priced, supervised service: pin the annual number down in writing, export your data, and check your own VAT numbers in VIES on a schedule that does not depend on your provider.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does hellotax cost? hellotax.com/pricing/ (checked 2026-08-01) loads on Pay Yearly at 39€ / 99€ / 399€ / 75€; on Pay Monthly the same four plans are 49€, 119€, 470€ and 89€, the first two priced per country, plus one-off fees of 300€ per country for registration or takeover and 149€ for OSS registration. The page also warns of “Additional compliance fees” in certain countries, so the published rate is a floor, not a total.

How long does a hellotax VAT registration take? hellotax states “We get you a VAT ID in 4-12 weeks” and notes that the authorities’ processing time is outside its control (checked 2026-08-01). Public reviews describe longer outcomes — one Polish registration re-quoted from “2 to 4 weeks” to “1 to 2 months” after payment (Trustpilot, 2025-07-15), one German registration reportedly taking eight months (Trustpilot, 2024-12-03). Individual reports, not a measured distribution.

Is hellotax good for Amazon FBA sellers? It is built for them, and sells both per-country registrations and OSS — the combination Pan-European FBA requires once you store stock abroad. The caveat is that Amazon data mapping is the most complained-about area in our corpus (Trustpilot, 2025-03-18), so reconcile the first few filings against your own Seller Central reports.
