Short answer: if you are leaving hellotax, you are leaving the one provider in this category that puts a rate card on a page you can read without a sales call — and only Staxxer gives that back, country by country. Everything else on this shortlist (SimplyVAT , AVASK , Taxually , Avalara ) is quote-only, and Taxdoo has effectively left the international market: its English site now redirects to the German one and its own contact forms say the service is for companies based in Germany. All figures below were read on each vendor’s own pages on 2026-09-02.

The variable that actually decides your shortlist is not price, though. It is which countries the provider files in — because hellotax covers twelve, and the four it does not cover are the four that most often force a second provider. This page compares services; it is not tax advice.

Why sellers leave the one provider that publishes a rate card

hellotax’s pricing page still carries the headline “EU VAT Compliance with no hidden costs” (hellotax.com/pricing/, data checked 2026-09-02), and the four plan cards are unchanged from our last check: on monthly billing, New Seller 49€ per country, OSS – Physical & Digital Goods 89€, Established Seller 119€ per country, and the 5 Countries Package 470€. Switch the page to Pay Yearly and those become 39€, 75€, 99€ and 399€. Under an “Additional Costs” heading on every card sit two one-off fees: “VAT Registration / Takeover for 300€ per country (one time)” and “OSS Registration for 149€ (one time)”.

That is more disclosure than any competitor here offers, so the reasons to leave are usually not the sticker. In our complaint corpus — 52 hellotax entries from Trustpilot, G2 and Capterra, deliberately weighted toward negative reviews, so it shows what goes wrong rather than how often — three patterns recur. Cost surprise on a plan boundary: New Seller’s cap is “Up to 500 transactions yearly”, counted per company across all countries, and the card restricts it to DE, UK, CZ and FR. Work you could have done yourself: “They completely overcharged for a registration that I could have easily done myself” (Trustpilot, 2026-06-23). Billing after cancellation: “Cancelled in January, got the cancellation confirmation… but then got billed in March for the renewal” (Trustpilot, 2026-03-02).

If you have not signed yet and are weighing the service rather than replacing it, our hellotax review works through the rate card, the stated 4–12 week registration window and the complaint record in full.

Start with coverage, not price

hellotax states its footprint verbatim at the bottom of the pricing page: “We operate in following countries: Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, UK, Ireland” (checked 2026-09-02). Twelve. That covers every Amazon EU marketplace and the usual Pan-EU FBA storage countries — but not Austria, Denmark, Finland or Romania, which is exactly where sellers on European fulfilment programmes or Nordic expansion end up needing a second provider.

So run the coverage test before the price test. Here is where the realistic replacements actually file, taken from each vendor’s own pages on 2026-09-02:

SimplyVAT publishes thirteen EU country pages — Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden (simplyvat.com, checked 2026-09-02) — which is the widest published EU list among the specialists here, and the only one that closes the Nordic and Austrian gaps in one contract. Staxxer’s card prices twelve countries and puts everything else under “Other countries — custom”. AVASK claims the widest footprint of all but publishes no country list to check: its homepage says it is “backed by 420+ compliance specialists across 60+ countries”, and its animated counters carry the values 18,000 clients and 500,000 VAT filings annually (avask.com page source, 2026-09-02).

What each alternative publishes, and what it withholds

hellotaxYesFour plan cards, monthly and annual, plus 300€ and 149€ one-offs
StaxxerYes, itemisedPer-country registration and monthly filing, plus deregistration and address-change fees
TaxdooYes, on the German sitePackages from 49€/mth, but the calculator is explicitly indicative

Everything in that table was checked on 2026-09-02. The pattern is worth naming before you start collecting quotes: you are moving from a category outlier back to the category norm. Budget for that, and ask every quote-only vendor for the same four numbers hellotax prints — registration per country, filing per country per month, deregistration, and the fee for a correction.

Staxxer — the itemised rate card, country by country

Staxxer (staxxer.com, a Netherlands company, VAT number NL862201688B01 in its footer) is the only replacement here that publishes more detail than hellotax does. Its pricing page separates software from service. The software is free under 200 transactions a month, €69/month for 200 to 1,000 transactions with “Then €20 per 1,000 extra transactions”, and quote-based above 10,000 (checked 2026-09-02). The service is a per-country table, printed in the Dutch style without a currency symbol on each row:

Source: staxxer.com/en/pricing/, data checked 2026-09-02. The same page prices annual filings at 149,- per year, deregistration at 299,- and an address change at 99,- per registration — the exit fee that no other provider here publishes at all. OSS is priced separately and narrowly: Belgium and the Netherlands at 149,- registration and 59,- per month, everything else “on request”. German EPR is on the same page (packaging 199,- registration, 159,- per year).

Who it fits: a seller in one to four western-European countries who wants to compare a total against hellotax’s per-country model, and who values a published exit price. Germany at 259,- plus 59,-/month undercuts hellotax’s 300€ plus 119€/month on Established Seller. Who it does not fit: anyone needing Ireland, Slovakia, Finland or Romania, all of which fall into “custom”. Our complaint corpus holds no Staxxer entries at all, which is an absence of evidence rather than a clean record — treat it as unverified on service quality.

SimplyVAT, AVASK and Avalara — the quote-only managed route

These three sell the same shape of thing hellotax sells, without the price list.

SimplyVAT is the closest match on scope and the widest on published EU coverage, and it now runs its own platform, Tribexa. One structural fact from a reviewer, worth putting in your questions rather than treating as a verdict: “SimplyVAT doesn’t file VAT directly but uses partners/agents. This structure means they lack control over their own fees, filing timelines, and de-registration processes” (Trustpilot, 2024-08-26). Recent entries are dominated by support collapse after onboarding — “Agents kept changing, emails stopped being answered, and no clear ownership of our account remained” (Trustpilot, 2026-02-05). Our SimplyVAT alternatives page has the full record.

AVASK has the widest claimed scope of anything here — VAT plus EPR, customs, e-invoicing readiness and non-EU sales tax across a stated 60+ countries — which makes it the natural answer if the reason you are leaving hellotax is that VAT alone no longer covers your obligations. The recurring complaint is exit friction, which matters when you have just been through one switch: “I sent to this company a disengagement form in February 2026 as I switched to another tax provider. To date, the disengagement process has not been completed yet” (Trustpilot, 2026-06-23). See AVASK alternatives for the pattern in detail.

Avalara is the enterprise route, and its EU VAT presence has quietly consolidated: the long-standing VATlive address, avalara.com/vatlive/en/index.html, redirected to Avalara’s UK homepage when we followed it on 2026-09-02, and the VAT products now sit in the main product navigation alongside a “Pricing FAQ” rather than a rate card. It is the right shape only if you need one vendor across VAT, US sales tax and e-invoicing. Avalara alternatives covers the US side, which is where its published pricing actually lives.

Taxually and Taxdoo — the platform route, minus one exit

Taxually is the platform-first option and is frequently recommended as a hellotax replacement, so two things are worth knowing before you shortlist it. First, taxually.com/pricing returned 404 on 2026-09-02 — there is no public price to compare. Second, its own homepage was internally inconsistent that day: the top banner reads “We’ve helped 20,000+ companies grow”, a section below reads “We’ve helped 15,000 companies grow”, and a statistics block still carried unreplaced placeholder copy, “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet”, under the figures 286%, 500K and $100k. That is a site-maintenance observation, not a service verdict — but the service record in our corpus is thin on patience too: “Nearly one year ago, I engaged Taxually to handle my German VAT registration. After almost twelve months, the process still had not been completed” (Trustpilot, 2026-07-05). More in Taxually alternatives and our Avalara vs Taxually comparison.

Taxdoo should come off most shortlists. On 2026-09-02, www.taxdoo.com/en/ redirected to www.taxdoo.com/de/ , /en/pricing/ returned 404, and the site is German-only, positioned as “Buchhaltung und Steuerberatung für onlinehändler” — bookkeeping and tax advisory rather than international VAT compliance. Packages start at 49€, 149€ and 399€ per month, with the FAQ stating that the price calculator is indicative only. Most decisively, a notice attached to the company-location field of Taxdoo’s own contact forms reads: “Vielen Dank für dein Interesse! Derzeit richten sich unsere Leistungen ausschließlich an Unternehmen mit Sitz in Deutschland” — thank you for your interest; our services are currently aimed exclusively at companies established in Germany. If your entity is not German, Taxdoo is not a candidate, whatever older comparison articles say. Verify this yourself before ruling it out or in: it is a change we observed on 2026-09-02 and vendor positioning moves.

Doing OSS yourself with a local accountant

The underrated option, and the one several reviewers in our corpus took after leaving a managed provider. Under the EU rules a business using an OSS scheme registers in a single Member State to declare its cross-border B2C sales, and the schemes are optional — a provider sells you return preparation and deadline management, not access to the system. hellotax charges 149€ once for that registration; you can make it yourself through your own tax authority.

The catch is stock. If you store goods in a country, that country generally wants a local VAT registration regardless of OSS, which is why Pan-EU FBA sellers end up with both. So the DIY route works cleanly when you store in one country and sell across the EU, and stops working the moment your inventory is placed in three. Our Amazon FBA sales tax primer covers the storage-triggers-registration logic. Confirm your own position with a qualified tax adviser before acting on any of it.

Before you cancel hellotax

Switching VAT providers mid-year is where the avoidable costs appear, and the complaint records of every provider here contain the same three failures. Settle these in writing first.

  1. Establish what has actually been filed, period by period and country by country, and get it in a document rather than a support-ticket thread. Deregistrations that never happened are the most expensive item in this corpus.
  2. Agree who files the final period. A cancellation confirmed before a return is due does not file that return.
  3. Get the deregistration and correction fees in the quote, not just the monthly. Only Staxxer publishes a deregistration price; everyone else will name one after you ask.
  4. Check your VAT numbers independently through the EU’s VIES lookup after the handover. One hellotax reviewer discovered a Polish deregistration seven weeks late that way.
  5. Cancel in writing and keep the confirmation, then check the next two invoices — post-cancellation billing appears in the hellotax, SimplyVAT and AVASK records alike.

How amzfinder assesses these services

We score seller services on the same eight dimensions as software — accuracy, ease, depth, automation, team fit, support, pricing and stage fit — with the method set out on our scorecards page . For compliance providers, two of those carry most of the weight: pricing, judged on what is published rather than what is quoted, and support, judged on the dated public complaint record rather than testimonials. We run no controlled hands-on benchmark of a filing service — that would mean handing a live VAT obligation to each vendor for a year.

FAQ: hellotax alternatives

Which hellotax alternative publishes its prices? Staxxer, and in more detail than hellotax does: per-country registration and monthly filing fees for twelve countries, plus 149,- for annual filings, 299,- for deregistration and 99,- for an address change (staxxer.com/en/pricing/, data checked 2026-09-02). Taxdoo publishes packages from 49€/month but only serves companies established in Germany. SimplyVAT, AVASK, Taxually and Avalara published no EU VAT rate card on 2026-09-02.

Which alternative covers Austria, Denmark or Finland? SimplyVAT publishes country pages for all three; Staxxer prices Austria and Denmark on its card but not Finland (checked 2026-09-02). hellotax covers none of them — its stated footprint is twelve countries and Austria, Denmark, Finland and Romania are outside it. AVASK claims 60+ countries but publishes no list to verify against.

Is Taxdoo still an option for non-German sellers? Not on the evidence of its own site on 2026-09-02. The English site redirects to the German one and a notice on the company-location field of its contact forms states that services are currently aimed exclusively at companies established in Germany. Confirm directly with Taxdoo before ruling it in.

Will switching fix the missed-deadline problem? Our corpus does not support that expectation. Recent entries for hellotax, SimplyVAT, AVASK, Taxually and Avalara are all dominated by one-star ratings describing the same three failures — slow registrations, missed filings and billing after cancellation. What differs is structure: who actually files, what is published, and how many registrations you need at all.

Is it cheaper to leave hellotax? Only country by country. Germany on Staxxer is 259,- to register and 59,- a month to file; hellotax’s Established Seller is 300€ to register and 119€ a month, per country (both checked 2026-09-02). hellotax’s 5 Countries Package and 39€ annual entry rate can win at other shapes. Compare full annual totals across every country you file in, including registration and deregistration, not headline monthlies.
