There is no clean drop-in replacement for AVASK. Read the AVASK complaint record alongside the complaint records of the providers sellers move to, and the same three failures appear everywhere — slow support, filings that fail silently, and billing that continues after cancellation — so the useful way to pick an AVASK alternative is by structure, not by brand. If your objection is opaque quote-based pricing, hellotax and Staxxer publish rate cards you can read without a sales call. If you want one provider spanning EU VAT and US sales tax, Taxually and Avalara are the scale options. And if the real problem is the number of registrations you are paying for, the cheapest alternative may be needing fewer of them rather than hiring someone new.
This page compares compliance services; it is not tax advice. Every tax or regulatory rule below is quoted from an official EU or Amazon source with its URL and check date (2026-07-23), and anything from user reviews is labelled as such. Whether a specific registration, deregistration or OSS election suits your business is a question for a tax adviser — the same point our Amazon FBA sales tax guide makes for the US side.
Why sellers look for an AVASK alternative
Our full assessment is in our AVASK review ; this is the short version, because these four failure modes are the criteria the alternatives get judged on.
Billing that continues after cancellation is the loudest theme by volume: “I canceled my VAT numbers and VAT compliance services for Italy and UK, and they are still charging me” (Trustpilot, 2026-06-02). Another reviewer cancelled their card outright — “We had to cancel our card just to make sure they do not keep charging” (Trustpilot, 2026-06-04).
Support that does not answer. A two-year customer reported: “We’ve been trying to get 2 addresses associated with our VAT numbers updated for nearly 3 months and have had one response to 21 requests” (Trustpilot, 2026-05-08). A forum poster described “no evidence of submission, no reference numbers” (Amazon UK seller forum).
Filings that fail without anyone telling you. “Our Polish VAT number got deregistered because returns weren’t filed. Nobody told us until we found out ourselves months later” (Trustpilot, 2026-05-06).
Exit friction matters most on an alternatives page: switching is not a cancellation, it is a handover of powers of attorney and tax-office access. One reviewer: “I requested the withdrawal of their power of attorney from the Austrian authorities so a new firm could take over my filings. Several months have passed and they still haven’t managed to do it” (Trustpilot, 2026-04-10).
The uncomfortable part: the same pattern repeats across the category
We maintain a complaint corpus for seller tools, compiled from Trustpilot, the Chrome Web Store, G2, Capterra, Amazon seller forums and other public review sources. It is deliberately weighted toward negative reviews — built to show what goes wrong, not how often. With that caveat stated, it holds (July 2026) 73 entries for AVASK, 68 for Avalara, 62 for Taxually, 52 for hellotax and 19 for SimplyVAT, with recent entries for all five skewing heavily to 1-star. The specifics rhyme closely with the AVASK list:
- hellotax — the same silent deregistration: “Our Polish VAT number was deregistered in March 2026. Hellotax never noticed – we discovered it ourselves 7 weeks later via VIES” (Trustpilot, 2026-07-06); and the same post-cancellation billing, a subscription “Cancelled in January, got the cancellation confirmation… but then got billed in March” (Trustpilot, 2026-03-02).
- Taxually — “They did not file our UK VAT return and we got penalty from HMRC” (Trustpilot, 2026-04-29), plus a Dutch case where a corrected VAT return went unsubmitted through six months of chasing while penalties accrued (Trustpilot, 2026-04-09).
- SimplyVAT — “Zero customer service, no-one answers phones, no-one replies to emails” (Trustpilot, 2026-07-01), on top of the agent-model problem detailed below.
- Avalara — annual EU returns stuck behind a support team “impossible to get hold of” (Trustpilot, 2026-05-27).
The traffic runs both ways: one reviewer who left Avalara for AVASK wrote “It has been a 1 year since I moved from Avalara to Avask” and said they could not be happier (Trustpilot, 2025-09-11). Migration stories are not a ranking — they show the same seller can be badly served by one provider and well served by another for reasons closer to which country desk they land on than to the logo on the invoice.
So do not switch on the promise of better service. Switch on something structural — fewer registrations, a published price, an in-country firm you can phone, or a written service level — because “their support is better” is the claim this category most reliably fails to keep.
First check whether you can switch structures, not providers
The cheapest AVASK alternative is often a smaller compliance footprint. Three official sources set how small yours can get: two EU VAT rules and one Amazon programme condition.
1. Storing inventory is the trigger. Amazon’s seller guidance states: “If you store and fulfill your products in the EU, you’ll also need to register for VAT in each of those countries before you start selling to customers” (sell.amazon.com , checked 2026-07-23). Pan-EU FBA, not sales volume, is what turns one registration into several.
2. OSS consolidates cross-border sales, not local stock. Under the Union One Stop Shop scheme, “A taxable person who opts to use one of the OSS schemes is only required to register in one single Member State, the Member State of identification”, covering “the cross-border sales of goods and services to consumers in other EU countries” and filed quarterly (European Commission and Your Europe , both checked 2026-07-23). The threshold bringing you into scope is small: “A VAT threshold of EUR 10 000 applies to distance sales for customers in the EU” (Your Europe , checked 2026-07-23). But OSS is a reporting simplification for those supplies, and the Commission’s own filing guidance assumes registration follows the stock: where goods are dispatched from a Member State other than the one you are identified in, “in most cases, he will have a VAT identification number in this Member State, because he is established there or because he is/needs to be VAT registered there”, and a supplier who “has a stock of goods in a Member State in which he is not VAT registered” is described as the rare, exceptional case, allowed to enter that Member State’s country code in the same box instead of a VAT number (European Commission , checked 2026-07-23). Whether OSS removes a particular local registration in your setup is a tax-adviser question.
3. Amazon has a route to local storage on a single VAT number. In a Seller Central Europe announcement published 2023-11-29, Amazon states: “Now you are only required to have a single VAT registration number in either Germany, France, Italy or Spain to enable additional local storage for eligible ASINs in any of these countries” (Seller Central Europe , checked 2026-07-23). That announcement is nearly three years old, so confirm the current eligibility rules in your own Seller Central account before planning around it. Amazon’s own text adds eligibility conditions and refers sellers to their tax advisers about obligations their previous activity may already have created — that is one programme’s entry requirement, not a statement that existing obligations disappear. Still, if you are paying for five or six filings today, costing this out with an adviser moves the bill more than any provider swap will. For the wider European picture, see our Amazon Europe guide .
AVASK alternatives at a glance
| Provider | Model | Coverage (official, checked 2026-07-23) | Published prices? | Recurring complaint in its own reviews |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| hellotax | Software plus local tax accountants, EU/UK ecommerce focus | EU VAT registration, filings and OSS | Yes — plans and one-off fees on site | Missed deregistrations, billing after cancellation |
| Staxxer | Dutch provider, VAT plus EPR, “any EU country” | VAT registration and returns in any EU country, OSS, EPR | Yes — per-country rate card | None in our corpus (see caveat below) |
| Taxually | Self-serve platform plus managed filing, global | VAT registration, calculation, filing and payment; US sales tax via LumaTax | No — demo/quote only | Late or missing filings, unreachable support |
| SimplyVAT | Managed service delivered partly through local agents | VAT, EPR and customs clearance; 20 countries under its “We do registrations, returns and more in” list (counted 2026-07-23) | No — quote only | Agent-model delays, deregistration friction |
| Avalara | Enterprise tax platform with returns and registration services | “register for VAT in over 70 countries” | No — quote only | Slow support, onboarding and filing errors at scale |
| Local accountant / in-country agent | One firm per country, direct relationship | Whatever that country needs | Varies | No aggregate data; you are buying one relationship |
hellotax — the published-price answer
Fixes: AVASK’s opacity. AVASK publishes no pricing at all (avask.com, checked 2026-07-23), so nothing is comparable before a sales call. hellotax publishes a rate card.
Coverage and model: software plus people — “Our specialized local tax accountants will keep you VAT compliant in Europe” — covering EU VAT registration, filings and OSS (hellotax.com , checked 2026-07-23).
Pricing (data checked 2026-07-23): New Seller €49/month per country (up to 500 transactions yearly), Established Seller €119/month per country (unlimited transactions), 5 Countries Package €470/month, OSS for physical and digital goods €89/month, VAT registration or takeover €300 per country one-off, OSS registration €149 one-off; annual payment is advertised as “Save 20% + Registration / Takeover free” (hellotax.com/pricing ).
Limitations: its own review record contains the failures you are leaving AVASK over — the same silent deregistration (Trustpilot, 2026-07-06), the same post-cancellation billing (Trustpilot, 2026-03-02), and one seller leaving over “multiple tax returns submitted to UK tax authority late resulting penalties/demerits” (Trustpilot, 2026-01-07). A published price fixes predictability, not delivery.
Staxxer — the itemised rate-card answer
Fixes: the “what am I actually paying per country?” problem. Staxxer prices registration and filing per country, so a five-country footprint is arithmetic rather than a negotiation.
Coverage and model: “We automate bookkeeping, VAT & EPR for e-commerce”, and “We can arrange VAT registration for you in any EU country, and do VAT returns for you in any EU country”, plus EPR for packaging, electronics and batteries (staxxer.com , checked 2026-07-23).
Pricing (data checked 2026-07-23): registration from €149 (Netherlands, Belgium) through €259 (Germany), €379 (France, UK) up to €479 (Sweden, Denmark), with a PAN EU package at €1,795; filings from €59/month per country and PAN EU filings at €359/month; EPR examples include Germany packaging at €199 registration plus €159/year (staxxer.com/pricing ).
Limitations: our complaint corpus contains no Staxxer entries at all — that is an absence of data, not a clean record. It is a much smaller provider than the others here, so treat it as unproven; the only corroboration is indirect, the same hellotax customer quoted above “Looking for an alternative and will be moving away from HelloTax (likely Staxxer)” (Trustpilot, 2026-01-07). Ask for references from sellers in your countries.
Taxually — the Amazon-adjacent platform answer
Fixes: breadth on one platform, including the US side, if you want VAT and sales tax under one login rather than one firm per region.
Coverage and model: Taxually positions itself as “Global coverage. Local expertise”, claims “20,000+ companies in over 150 countries”, and covers US sales tax through LumaTax alongside VAT registration, calculation, filing and payment (taxually.com , checked 2026-07-23). Pricing is not published; the site routes you to a demo.
Limitations: this is where our corpus is harshest — an HMRC penalty for an unfiled UK return (Trustpilot, 2026-04-29), a Dutch case where “billing continued 5+ months after cancellation request” (Trustpilot, 2026-04-09), and a German registration still unfinished after “Nearly One Year, Still No Results” (Trustpilot, 2026-07-05). If you are leaving AVASK over stalled registrations and post-cancellation billing, Taxually’s record shows no structural fix for either.
SimplyVAT — the specialist EU/UK service
Fixes: it is a VAT-first specialist rather than a general tax platform, offering support with “VAT, EPR and customs clearance” and listing 20 countries under “We do registrations, returns and more in” — 13 EU member states plus the UK, USA, Canada, Japan, Norway, Switzerland and the UAE (counted on simplyvat.com , 2026-07-23). Pricing is quote-only.
Limitations: understand the delivery model before you sign. A long-term customer described it directly: SimplyVAT “doesn’t file VAT directly but uses partners/agents”, which in their account meant less control over “fees, filing timelines, and de-registration processes” (Trustpilot, 2024-08-26). That is the same intermediated structure behind several AVASK country-desk complaints. If you are cross-shopping the two, our dedicated SimplyVAT alternatives page covers the reverse move.
Avalara — the enterprise answer
Fixes: scale and integration breadth. Avalara states its VAT Registration service “allows you to register for VAT in over 70 countries, with an easy-to-manage process workflow” (avalara.com , checked 2026-07-23), alongside returns, reporting and US sales tax in the same suite. Pricing is quote-based and not published.
Limitations: size does not buy responsiveness. Reviewers report EU annual returns stuck with “their support team are impossible to get hold of” (Trustpilot, 2026-05-27), an address change filed incorrectly in Spain that a successor adviser had to fix (Trustpilot, 2026-02-09), and at least one seller who moved from Avalara to AVASK and was happier for it (Trustpilot, 2025-09-11). Avalara fits a business that needs many jurisdictions and an enterprise contract; it is a poor answer to “I want someone who replies”.
A local accountant in each country — what the reviewers themselves did
The most common resolution in the corpus is not another pan-European platform but a smaller firm, often in one country. One AVASK customer “had to hire another provider to obtain the German VAT number in ~20 days — something AVASK never achieved” (Trustpilot, 2025-12-13); another routed their French registration through a different firm after AVASK could not complete it (Trustpilot, 2026-06-23).
Best for: sellers in one to three EU countries, where a named accountant beats a ticket queue. Trade-off: each country’s filings, deadlines and EPR obligations become yours to track, which scales badly past three or four countries — the gap the pan-European providers exist to fill. For the surrounding stack, see our best Amazon seller tools list .
How to leave AVASK without a compliance gap
The reviews are unanimous that the exit is riskier than the entry. This sequence comes from what went wrong for reviewers, not from any provider’s onboarding script:
- Sign the new provider before you cancel the old one. Several reviewers cancelled first, then found filings mid-cycle with nobody owning the next deadline.
- Get written confirmation of what has actually been filed — reference numbers and submission proofs, per country and per period. AVASK reviewers repeatedly report “no evidence of submission, no reference numbers” (Amazon UK seller forum).
- Handle the power of attorney explicitly. Ask in writing when the outgoing provider revokes its POA with each tax office and when the incoming one files its own — the step that ran for months in the 2026-04-10 review above.
- Check every VAT number yourself before and after the handover in the European Commission’s official VIES validation service (checked 2026-07-23), and confirm the numbers Amazon holds still match. Two reviewers — one at AVASK, one at hellotax — learned of a deregistration only because they looked it up themselves. A number that stops validating is not only a filing problem: the Amazon announcement quoted above conditions eligibility for its single-VAT-number local placement on a VAT number “which has passed both external and Amazon verification” (Seller Central Europe , published 2023-11-29, checked 2026-07-23).
- Kill the payment mandate last, and watch it. Post-cancellation charges are the most repeated complaint against AVASK, hellotax and Taxually alike — confirm the cancellation date in writing and check statements for two further billing cycles.
- Ask the new provider for deregistration terms on day one — cost, notice period, who files the final return. Cheapest question at signup, most expensive at exit.
How amzfinder compares these services
We assess seller tools on eight dimensions — Accuracy, Ease of Use, Depth, Automation, Team Fit, Support, Pricing and Stage Fit (see our scoring methodology ). For compliance services we weight Accuracy and Support heaviest, and score Pricing on predictability rather than level: a €59/month filing you can forecast beats an unknown annual total. These are managed services rather than software we can benchmark hands-on, so this page is a qualitative read of official service pages and dated public reviews, not a controlled test. For the US side, see our TaxJar alternatives comparison, and factor compliance cost into your Amazon FBA fees maths.
FAQ: AVASK alternatives
What is the best AVASK alternative for EU VAT? There is no single best one. Match the switch to the reason: hellotax or Staxxer for published pricing, Taxually or Avalara for one provider across many jurisdictions including US sales tax, a local accountant if you are in one to three countries and want a named human. All carry complaints resembling the ones you are leaving, so weight structure and written terms over service promises.
Which AVASK alternatives publish their prices? hellotax and Staxxer (data checked 2026-07-23): hellotax from €49/month per country with registration at €300 per country; Staxxer with registration from €149 and filings from €59/month. AVASK, Taxually, SimplyVAT and Avalara are quote-only, so the comparable number is your full annual total across every country, not a headline fee.
Can I just use OSS instead of paying for multiple VAT registrations? OSS lets a business register in one Member State to declare cross-border sales to consumers elsewhere in the EU, filed quarterly under the Union scheme (European Commission and Your Europe, checked 2026-07-23). It is a reporting simplification for those supplies — Amazon’s guidance is that storing and fulfilling products in an EU country requires VAT registration there (sell.amazon.com, checked 2026-07-23). Whether OSS plus a changed storage setup reduces your registrations is a question for a tax adviser with your actual stock movements in front of them.
Is AVASK worse than the alternatives? Our corpus does not support that ranking. It is deliberately weighted toward negative reviews, and recent entries for AVASK, Avalara, Taxually, hellotax and SimplyVAT are all dominated by 1-star ratings describing the same failures. What differs is structure — who files, whether prices are published, how many registrations you actually need — and that is what this page compares.
