Avalara sells two different things to sellers, and the alternative you want depends on which one you are leaving. If you are leaving the US sales tax product — AvaTax plus Managed Returns — the replacements are TaxCloud, Numeral and Zamp, and all three publish more of their pricing than Avalara does. If you are leaving the European VAT service, the replacements are hellotax, Staxxer, a specialist firm such as SimplyVAT or AVASK, or a local accountant per country, and Avalara’s VAT side is still quote-only. One fact changes the arithmetic in 2026: Avalara now lists US plan prices at $79 state/month and $799 state/year, so its cost scales linearly with the number of states you register in (avalara.com
, data checked 2026-08-06).
This page compares tax compliance software and services and is not tax or legal advice. Provider facts come from official pages checked 2026-08-06; seller experiences come from dated public reviews and are labelled as such. Our TaxJar alternatives comparison ranks the US market for sellers leaving a light, low-priced tool; this page starts from Avalara’s own record, so the ordering differs.
First decide which Avalara you are leaving
Avalara’s US and EU offerings fail in different ways and have almost no overlap in replacements, so mixing them is what makes this decision feel impossible.
The US side is software plus a filing service: calculation, nexus monitoring, registrations at $403 per location, and Managed Returns, packaged into plans priced per state (avalara.com
, data checked 2026-08-06). It competes with a crowded field of self-serve tools.
The EU and international side is a managed compliance service — “registrations, return preparation, submission, fiscal representation where required, and tax authority correspondence”, “Supported in 53 countries across the Americas, EMEA, and APAC” (avalara.com , checked 2026-08-06). No price is published; the same page says pricing is tiered by service level and that “A short scoping call is the fastest way to get an indicative figure.”
If you sell on Amazon in Europe and originally came to Avalara through Amazon, that route no longer exists in either direction. Amazon’s announcement titled “VAT Services on Amazon ends on October 31, 2024” states the programme closed on that date, that providers would “charge you directly” from the October 2024 filings onward, and that Amazon was “working to launch an improved programme by 2025” (Seller Central Europe , checked 2026-08-06). We found no such successor programme announced as of 2026-08-06. You are buying a commercial service on its merits, with no Amazon-side escalation route.
What the Avalara complaint record actually says
Our seller-tool complaint corpus is compiled from Trustpilot, marketplace app stores and software directories, and is deliberately weighted toward negative reviews — built to show what goes wrong, not how often. As of 2026-08-06 it holds 68 Avalara entries: 60 rated reviews dated 2024-07-03 to 2026-06-30 (58 at one star, one at two, one at three) plus eight undated summaries from Capterra and G2 listings. Treat it as questions to ask a replacement, not as a satisfaction rate.
1. Onboarding and registration that runs months past the quote. “I started a process with Avalara Ltd on 01/05/2025 and was clearly told it would take around 8 weeks” — the reviewer wrote on 14 July that documents had only just reached the Irish tax office (Trustpilot, 2025-07-14). Another described a Dutch VAT and EORI registration where “the process of getting a Dutch VAT & EORI number took roughly 12 weeks” (Trustpilot, 2025-09-12).
2. Filings late, wrong, or done by the customer instead. The most concrete US case: a small apparel business on a bundle of “AvaTax, Managed Returns, ECM Pro, QuickBooks and Shopify integrations” at “$352/month” that titled its review “Five straight months of failed filings - our CPA ended up doing the returns by hand” (Trustpilot, 2026-06-11). On the EU side, sellers report German VAT returns unfiled and penalties following (Trustpilot, 2025-03-25, 2025-10-28).
3. Support without case ownership. Not rudeness — routing. “The case is passed to the next person, who again asks the same questions that are already answered multiple times” (Trustpilot, 2026-05-26). Another: “One team often seems unaware of what the other team is doing” (Trustpilot, 2026-03-26). One reviewer paying separately for support wrote of “no support despite paying $5k a year for Support alone” (Trustpilot, 2026-06-30). Reviews aggregated on Capterra and G2 describe the same pattern in summary form: support that closes tickets without resolution, and staff turnover that resets the case each time.
4. Cost that arrives after the contract, not before it. “Not all costs were disclosed upfront at the point of sale” (Trustpilot, 2026-01-08). One US seller reported being “billed us 4500$ for just filling 14 sales tax reports in the US” after cancelling in time (Trustpilot, 2025-05-27); another that a required Shopify connector was “an extra 3K per year” and that Avalara charges “10 times more than an CPA would for sales tax” (Trustpilot, 2025-10-31).
The counterweight, from the same record: the one three-star entry is a German VAT failure that was later fixed after a named employee stepped in, edited on 17 November 2025 to say so (Trustpilot, 2025-11-12). Outcomes track whether a specific person takes ownership of your account more reliably than they track the brand.
What Avalara costs now that it publishes a price
This is the single most out-of-date belief about Avalara, including in our own earlier comparisons: that it is quote-only. As of 2026-08-06 the US plans carry list prices.
| Plan | Published price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Core Compliance | “$79 state/month” or “$799 state/year (15% annual savings)” | AvaTax, Managed Returns, nexus monitoring, integrations |
| Core Compliance + SST Services | “$69 state/month” or “$699 state/year (15% annual savings)” | State-funded in up to 25 SST states for qualifying sellers |
| Custom | Not published | Positioned at “Annual revenue $50M+” |
| Sales Tax Registration | “$403 per location” | One-off, separate from the plan |
| License Guidance | “as low as $119” | One-off |
Source: avalara.com/simplify/pricing and avalara.com/products/pricing , data checked 2026-08-06. Avalara states pricing “varies and depends on” products purchased, integrations, monthly transaction volume, number of states, and SST enrolment — so the list price is a floor to benchmark a quote against, not the quote.
Two consequences. First, cost is per state: ten states at Core Compliance list price is roughly $7,990 a year before registrations, which is the arithmetic behind the reviewer complaint that a CPA costs a fraction of it. Second, the SST plan is cheaper than the standard one. If you have no physical nexus in Streamlined Sales Tax member states, checking your SST eligibility is worth more than switching vendors — and it is also the lever TaxCloud pushes hardest.
Match the alternative to the failure
| If you are leaving over… | The structural fix | Providers that offer it |
|---|---|---|
| Per-state cost that scales faster than you do | Pricing tied to filings or order volume, not state count | Numeral, TaxCloud |
| Filings that did not happen | A written penalty guarantee | Numeral |
| No case owner | A managed service with named specialists | Zamp, a local CPA |
| Costs disclosed after signature | A full public rate card, including exit | TaxCloud, Staxxer, hellotax |
| EU VAT filings and registrations | An EU-specialist provider, not a US suite | hellotax, Staxxer, SimplyVAT, AVASK |
| Being in too many states at all | A nexus review before buying anything | A sales tax adviser |
US sales tax: three replacements, three billing models
TaxCloud — priced by order volume, free in SST states
TaxCloud sells “Starter” and “Premium” plans priced by monthly order tier, with tiers spanning 100 to 240,000 orders a month and up to 16% off for annual billing. Filing services are quoted “Starting at $39/mo” with a pay-as-you-go option, audit support “Starting at $99/mo”, and Colorado and Louisiana filings carry surcharges. Card payments add an “additional 7% convenience fee”, and overage orders bill at your plan’s per-order rate (taxcloud.com/pricing , data checked 2026-08-06).
The decisive line for smaller sellers is SST: TaxCloud states its services are free in 24 member states for enrolled sellers with no physical nexus there. That is the same programme Avalara charges $69 state/month to sit alongside. If most of your states are SST states and your only physical presence is one home state, this comparison is not close on price.
Numeral — priced per filing and per registration
Numeral charges “$75 per filing / $150 per registration” on its Standard plan, with a free monitoring tier that covers physical and economic nexus tracking and alerting, and a custom-priced Pro plan adding exemption certificate management, API access, voluntary disclosure agreements and coverage in 80+ countries (numeral.com/pricing , data checked 2026-08-06). It states “No long-term contract needed” and that “There are a few states that require a registration fee; however, most states are free.”
This is the cleanest answer to the per-state arithmetic above: a seller filing monthly in ten states pays by the return rather than by the seat, and adding a state that files annually costs one filing, not a year of plan. Numeral also publishes the commitment the complaint record most wants: “Your sales tax will be filed on time, or we’ll pay your penalties and interest charges.” Ask for that in the contract, not the website.
Zamp — managed, and still quote-only
Zamp offers Free, U.S., and U.S. + Canada tiers, with automated registrations, return preparation and submission, ACH remittance, nexus monitoring and “State notice monitoring & expert resolution” on the paid tiers. It does not publish prices, and it argues the point directly: “Flat per-state or per-filing pricing often hides risk and leads to add-ons later” (zamp.com/pricing , checked 2026-08-06).
Be honest with yourself about this one. If opaque pricing is why you are leaving Avalara, Zamp reproduces that condition. If unanswered tickets are why you are leaving, its free tier — a nexus assessment, historical exposure analysis and a 30-minute expert consultation — lets you test responsiveness before paying anything.
EU VAT: the two providers that publish a rate card
Avalara’s EU service is priced by scoping call. Two alternatives are not, which is the whole reason to look at them.
hellotax lists per country: 49€/month on “New Seller”, capped at “Up to 500 transactions yearly”; 119€/month on “Established Seller” with unlimited transactions; 89€/month for OSS covering physical and digital goods; and a “5 Countries Package” at 470€/month. Registration or takeover is “300€ per country (one time)”, OSS registration 149€, and paying yearly is advertised as “Save 20% + Registration / Takeover free”. Coverage is twelve countries: Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, UK and Ireland — narrower than the 53-country footprint you are leaving (hellotax.com/pricing , data checked 2026-08-06).
Staxxer itemises registration and filing separately per country: Germany €259 registration and €59/month filing, France €379 and €99/month, Spain €429 and €69/month, UK €379 and €79/month, PAN EU €1,795 and €359/month. Its software is free under 200 transactions a month and €69/month from 200 to 1,000. Critically for anyone who has just been through an exit, it prices leaving: “Deregistration” at “€299,-” and an address change at “€99,-(per registration)” (staxxer.com/en/pricing , data checked 2026-08-06).

Before you cancel, establish what has actually been filed
The corpus contains multiple accounts of registrations cancelled, deregistrations filed unasked, and billing continuing after cancellation. Cancel before you know where you stand and you own an unknown liability without access. Work in this order.
- Get written proof of every filing — jurisdiction, period, submission date, reference number, amount. Ask while you are still a paying customer; leverage disappears at cancellation.
- Verify your registrations independently. Check each US state account directly with the state, and validate EU VAT numbers in the European Commission’s VIES service . One reviewer discovered an incorrect Spanish address only after leaving, and had to pay a new adviser to fix it (Trustpilot, 2026-02-09).
- Inventory logins, powers of attorney and direct debit mandates in every jurisdiction before the handover starts.
- Sign the incoming provider first, and agree in writing which one owns the next deadline in each jurisdiction.
- Instruct in writing that no deregistration is to be filed without your explicit request.
- Cancel the payment mandate last, then watch two more billing cycles. Post-cancellation billing is one of the most repeated complaints in the record.
How amzfinder assesses these services
We score seller tools on eight dimensions — Accuracy, Ease of Use, Depth, Automation, Team Fit, Support, Pricing and Stage Fit (see our scoring methodology , which asks you to rank the dimensions by your own priorities). For compliance services we rank Accuracy and Support first, and read Pricing as predictability rather than level: a $75 filing fee you can forecast beats an unknown annual total. These are managed services rather than software we can benchmark hands-on, so this page is a qualitative read of official pricing pages and dated public reviews, not a controlled test. FAQ: Avalara alternatives
What is the cheapest Avalara alternative for a small seller? For US sales tax, TaxCloud if your states are Streamlined Sales Tax members and you have no physical nexus there — it states those services are free for qualifying enrolled sellers (checked 2026-08-06). Otherwise Numeral’s “$75 per filing / $150 per registration” is the model that stays cheapest when you file in a handful of states.
Does Avalara publish its prices? Partly, as of 2026-08-06. US plans are listed at “$79 state/month” / “$799 state/year”, the SST plan at “$69 state/month” / “$699 state/year”, registration at “$403 per location”. The international VAT service publishes no price and routes to a scoping call. Both are list positions, not quotes — Avalara states pricing varies with volume, integrations and state count.
Which Avalara alternative handles EU VAT for Amazon sellers? hellotax and Staxxer publish rate cards and file EU VAT returns; SimplyVAT and AVASK are quote-only specialists. Note that no provider is reachable through Amazon any more: VAT Services on Amazon closed on 31 October 2024 and no successor programme was announced as of 2026-08-06.
Can I keep AvaTax for calculation and file returns elsewhere? Technically the functions are separable — calculation, registration and returns are priced as distinct products. Whether your contract permits dropping Managed Returns mid-term is a contract question, so read your renewal terms and get the answer in writing before you sign anything with a replacement.
